Ever Wondered Why ‘C’ Is The Default Drive On Most Computers?

Computers and laptops have become a part of our lives. With changing time, people are becoming more dependent upon technology. While using computers, have you ever wondered why ‘C’ is the default drive? Why don’t we have A or B drive?

The reason behind this is absolutely simple…

Earlier, computers didn’t have much storage space. People used to use floppies to store information. Therefore, floppy disks were labeled A. As floppies used to come in two different sizes, 3 ½” and 5 ½, therefore names, A and B were given to them. This process was followed till the 1980s. In the late 1980s, hard disks came into existence and they became the primary source for storing information and operating system.

Since A and B were allotted to floppy disks, therefore, hard disk drive got labeled C. With time, floppy disks became outdated and so were their labels, A and B. As there are no A and B floppy drives in computer anymore, the name of the drives starts with C.

But, if you have the administrative rights of the computer, you can change the order of the labels and rename your drives as A and B.
